One of the early influences was Delft's blauw ceramics—its vibrant pigments, delicate ornaments, and crackled glazes that create layered textures and emotional depth. In this project, I use the traditional Japanese Shibori technique with indigo and ink on different papers—washi, calligraphy, recycled, and even 300-year-old* handmade Japanese sheets. By layering semi-transparent paper, I explore the possibility of creating the deepest blue—a symbol of the endless sky and the deepest ocean. These artworks are like windows into other worlds, inviting viewers to imagine their own stories. Since 2016, I’ve been growing indigo myself and extracting the pigment through traditional fermentation. This direct connection—from seed to color—is central to the project’s sustainable philosophy and adds an intimate, personal dimension to the work. The sky and the ocean unite us—we all breathe the same air and live on one blue planet. Le Grand Bleu is a tribute to that unity: expressive, powerful, and deeply human. Some paintings were donated to the Amsterdam Dinner 2017 to support the fight against AIDS—completing the moon cycle of the project, from inspiration to giving back. * I received 300-year-old paper pieces from Peter Poldervaart (1943–2019), who told me, “Valentin, I’ve kept these papers for so many years. Don’t keep them—use them!”Peter was the head of the paper restoration atelier at the Rijksmuseum for 27 years. I visited his atelier several times, where we bonded over our shared love for paper. From him, I learned various techniques for working with handmade papers and glues, often guided by his illustrated books from his studies in Japan. artbakard.com https://artbakard.com/The-Butterfly-Effect The Butterfly Effect sustainable art project My ‘Butterfly Effect’ addresses the problem of climate change as a result of overconsumption and waste. With all the challenges we are facing regarding the environment and our planet, it is key to focus on sustainable ways of working by using all possible leftover materials. I found new ways to incorporate for instance corn leaves, avocado peel and seeds to create my art, to make us all experience nature in a different way, and promote sustainable thinking and living. Focusing on what is around us and what could be usable and/ or reusable. In a way making art from garbage. My goal is to inspire people to search for new ways towards creating a better future for our planet. A butterfly flapping its wings could theoretically cause a tropical storm on the other side of the World. In&nbsp;Chaos theory, The Butterfly Effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state. In other words a small change now could have a big effect on our lives later. All our actions have consequences, and we need to fulfil our responsibilities, especially when it comes to our beautiful planet. In The Butterfly Effect I’m framing nature, focusing on nature, reminding us that we are part of nature – promoting the importance of keeping the planet clean. In my project I’m focusing on sustainability by using natural and leftover materials. I chose corn leaves, a very common material, to recreate the fine structure of a butterfly wing in close-up. I use natural pigments and inks such as indigo (grown by me in Amsterdam), nettle leaf, avocado peel and seeds to stay true to my ideas and convictions whilst creating this series of art works. My aim is to show the hidden beauty and richness of organic structures. artbakard.com https://artbakard.com/El-Aumento El Aumento - The Expand sustainable art project In 2016 I started working on this upcycle art project, which originated from my conviction that the figurative paintings I had made in the past did not have the right form and shape anymore. I felt the need to reinvent myself and work in an new way. I made the courageous decision to start cutting up my oil paintings and re-use/ upcycle the pieces. I decided to stop doing what the public expected from me, and become the artist that I wanted to be. So I destroyed my oil paintings and I reused them to create a new art series. I transformed my figurative art into abstract art, where all the symbols are repositioned and yet remain recognizable. My creative process continued even when my oil paintings had been completed - an old idea transformed into contemporary art. project Le Grand Bleu. He applies ancient craft techniques, taking them to a fine art level. He applies the Shibori&nbsp;technique with Indigo and ink on various types of paper, such as washi, calligraphy, recycled and even 300-year-old handmade Japanese paper. By placing many layers of semi-transparent paper he explores the possibility of creating the deepest blue colour as a symbol of endless sky and deepest ocean. The Cube Universe is the first interactive installation that he has developed under this research. He wants to give the viewers the chance to feel that they can have the universe in their hands, and to see the problems around us from different perspectives. materials framing the reflection of the cosmos on water. The project explores the connections between local and global, blending nature with culture and history. What is Environmental Art? While there is no fixed definition, environmental art is considered to be any artwork that improves our connection to the natural world. Much of it is made to degrade, collapsing and disappearing over time, reabsorbing back into the natural environment. Textile on water: made from the nature – made in the nature – stays in the nature. The project is made from fresh green water reed and dry corn leaves weaved together and displayed on water surface. In Directions of Life, I draw from the symbolic language of 18th-century family crests, which historically conveyed social status and heritage. These emblems served as coded narratives of identity and belonging. In this series, I reinterpret their forms to construct a contemporary visual dialogue—one that reflects how identity is shaped, questioned, and redefined in today’s complex world. The central visual motif across the series is the Tree of Life, reshaped into vessels such as an ewer, bowl, or amphora. These forms suggest the fluidity and multiplicity of life paths, each a container for personal choice, cultural influence, and existential balance. Directions of Life incorporates a compass—subtly disguised as a pet’s playball—at its base. It questions the illusion of clear direction: Is it truly easy to decide what you’ll become in life—a mermaid, a bird, a dragon, or a monster?Directions of Life – Lions explores the metaphor of the lion as a symbol of human nature. We navigate between yin and yang, softness and force, choosing whether to embody a domestic cat, a wild beast, or the lion king.Directions of Life – Birds features a scale whose axis is made from a bow and arrow—evoking ambiguity in moral judgment. Acts intended as good can harm, while seemingly negative actions might protect. The line between right and wrong is often blurred. The original compositions were created in black ink on paper and then translated into limited-edition Iris silkscreen prints using two color layers. Variations in the printing process render each piece unique. While produced in series, each print is treated as an original work. Held alongside the exhibition, these workshops extend the project’s mission by involving children, students, and prisoners. This series integrates sustainability by utilizing natural materials and exploring the intersection of art and science. The collection incorporates corn leaves dyed with natural indigo extracted from Persicaria tinctoria (Koujoko), a plant cultivated in the artist's Amsterdam garden. The corn variety used is the heritage Blue maize (Zea mays azul), sourced from heirloom Mexican seeds. Influenced by the Butterfly Effect theory and the Tesseract concept, TBE-TT aims to inspire a deeper awareness of environmental issues and promote sustainable practices. By combining traditional craft with contemporary thought, the collection seeks to create a dialogue about the potential of art to drive positive change.
